Generational Excellence
Campbell Oil Company was founded in 1948 by Dallas McQueen Campbell, Sr., a hardworking, humble Christian man and avid pilot. Born in Dillon, South Carolina, he later moved with his family to North Carolina, where they farmed and built their roots. He married Bonnie Mae Hall, a schoolteacher, and together they settled in Elizabethtown, raising three children—Mac Jr., Stuart, and Karen.
Mac Sr. served his country as the first man drafted in North Carolina during World War II. Described as a man of “unquestionable character and integrity,” these values became the foundation of Campbell Oil. His strong Christian faith and patriotism continue to guide the company’s core values today.
Mac Sr. entered the petroleum business in the 1930s, opening “Mac’s Place,” a service station lost to fire in 1939. After serving in the Army, he launched Campbell Oil in 1948, delivering petroleum products across Bladen County. Over time, the business grew, adding delivery trucks, offices, and lubricants.
In 1968, after graduating from UNC Pembroke, Mac Jr. joined the family business. When Mac Sr. fell ill in 1974, Mac Jr. took over, navigating challenges like the Oil Embargo. The company continued expanding, opening its first convenience store in 1979. Sadly, Mac Sr. passed away in 1981, but his legacy of integrity and service lives on.
Today, Campbell Oil stands strong because of the foundation he and Bonnie Mae built—one of hard work, high expectations, and a commitment to treating people with care and respect. After more than 75 years in business, Mac Jr.’s four boys run the company with many of the fourth generation Campbells as part of the day to day operations building a legacy for the next 75 years and many to come after that.
